Surviving New Years with Your Dog: A Guide to a Safe and Stress-Free Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time for joy, family, and celebration—but for our furry friends, it can also bring stress and unexpected dangers. Between the bustling holiday plans, visitors, and festive decorations, our dogs may find themselves overwhelmed or in risky situations. With a little preparation and awareness, you can ensure that this Christmas is as magical for your pet, as it is for you. At Speak! for the Unspoken, we’ve seen firsthand how a little preparation can go a long way to make the holidays safe and joyful for you and your furry family members!

KEEPING YOUR DOG CALM AMID THE CHAOS

The holidays often bring changes in routine, unfamiliar faces, and an overload of stimulation. As an organization that rescues dogs with special needs, we understand the importance of creating safe, comfortable environments for all dogs. Here are a few tips to help your dog stay calm and happy during this season:

  • Create a Quiet Space: Designate a cozy, quiet area for your dog to retreat when the festivities get too overwhelming. Whether it’s a crate or a separate room, this space should feel safe, separated and comfortable for them to unwind, unbothered.

  • Engage Their Mind and Body: Provide engaging activities like sniffing games, chew toys, or lick mats to keep your dog entertained and de-stressed. These outlets can help them relax and redirect their energy in a positive way.

  • Manage Triggers: If your dog tends to jump on guests or steal food from the table, consider using baby gates or creating a barrier to manage their environment. Prevention is key to avoiding unnecessary stress for both you and your pet.

  • Respect Their Choice: Not every dog enjoys a house full of people or the chaos of holiday celebrations. Let your dog decide whether they want to be part of the festivities or prefer to sit them out in their quiet space.

WATCH OUT FOR HOLIDAY HAZARDS

While creating a calm environment is essential, it's equally important to be aware of potential dangers the holidays bring. According to McLaren Vale Veterinary Surgery, some of the most common holiday hazards for pets include:

  • Festive Foods: Chocolate, grapes, raisins, alcohol and fatty foods can be toxic for dogs. Keep these treats out of reach and remind guests not to feed your pet scraps.

  • Plants: Poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe may look beautiful, but they’re toxic to dogs if ingested. Keep these plants out of your dog’s reach.

  • Decorations: Party poppers, tinsel, ornaments, and fairy lights can be enticing but dangerous if chewed or swallowed.

  • Gifts & Stockings: Stockings filled with chocolate or other goodies should always be stored out of your pet’s reach—many festive treats can be toxic for dogs. After unwrapping gifts, be vigilant about loose items like batteries, zip ties, or small toy pieces. These can pose serious choking hazards or cause internal injuries if swallowed.

KEEPING YOUR DOG’S ROUTINE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The holiday season can be hectic, but maintaining your dog’s regular routine is essential for their well-being. Stick to consistent mealtimes, walks, and play sessions to help them feel secure amidst the holiday chaos.

If someone else is pet-sitting, be sure to provide a clear, written list of your dog’s schedule, dietary do’s and don’ts, and any special instructions. This ensures your furry friend stays happy, healthy, and stress-free while you’re away. Consistency and communication make all the difference for a joyful holiday season!

If you need more advice or support with training and behavior, don’t hesitate to reach out to your vet or a certified dog behaviorist. Together, we can make this season memorable (and manageable) for all!
